We have embarked on an exciting new program at Bell Helicopter…designing and building the new and very prestigious VH-71 Presidential Helicopter. The VH-71 helicopter fleet will be unarguably the most visible in the world…providing first class helicopter transportation to the President of the United States.  Members of this program will directly contribute to the safe and secure transportation of the President of the United States, senior ranking government officials, and other heads of state in all parts of the world….day or night…rain or shine.  

The VH-71 Presidential Helicopter Program is looking for greatness in the engineering disciplines of Mechanical, Electrical, Flight Test, Instrumentation, Engineering Liaison, Structural Dynamics and Experimental Test Pilot.

The VH-71’s home for the next several years will be located at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in southern Maryland. The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level.  UAH is located in one of the leading centers for aviation and space research.  UAH is adjacent to the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, which provides our faculty and students with outstanding opportunities for collaboration with these organizations.  UAH also has several research centers that collaborate with the Department, including the Propulsion Research Center, Center for Space Plasma and Aeronomic Research, Center for Applied Optics, Nano and Micro Devices Center, Center for Modeling Simulation & Analysis, and the Center for Rotorcraft Systems Engineering and Simulation.  The Department offers Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral programs in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.  The Department ranked nineteenth in the nation in the most recent NSF rankings (FY 2001) of research expenditures by mechanical engineering departments with expenditure of $4.6M.  The Department also has 500 undergraduate students and 130 graduate students. These enrollment numbers have been increasing for several years.

An outstanding individual in any relevant discipline will be considered. However, applicants with excellent credentials are sought in the following two specific areas. The successful applicant will fill either of these two requirements:

  • 1) Candidates should have a basic knowledge of solid and structural mechanics, with expertise in advanced materials and analysis, which may include composite materials, fracture and fatigue mechanics, reliability, structural stability, analysis of aerospace structures, aero-elasticity, structural dynamics, or finite elements.  Special areas of interest include composite materials, rotorcraft structures and dynamics, aerospace structures, and classical mechanics.
  • 2) Candidates should have a strong background in aerodynamics and compressible fluid mechanics and research expertise in experimental methods or computational fluid dynamics.

   The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and demonstrated research capabilities that will enable the candidate to develop externally funded, independent research programs including publications in scholarly journals.

   Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field from an ABET accredited institution.  Previous teaching experience is desirable.  The candidate must be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance. EDO Corporation is a leading provider of products for the defense, intelligence, and commercial markets. EDO’s Lexington Park, MD office is currently seeking applicants for multiple positions to work as subject matter experts in the areas of air-breathing propulsion and power engineering. Project engineers will be engaged in the Research and Development Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) and In-Service Engineering of propulsion and power systems and subsystems in support of Naval Aviation. Successful applicants will evaluate engineering designs, schedule and cost for new and upgraded systems. Examples of areas to be evaluated include helicopter transmissions and drive shafts, gas turbine engines, engine controls and aircraft fuel systems. Systems supported include man and unmanned, fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

5+ years of experience in aviation propulsion systems RDT&E and a bachelor's degree in engineering is required. It is desired that the applicant have an understanding of the systems engineering process, and an understanding of DOD Aviation requirements and their operational environment. This position requires interface with Navy customer personnel and Original Equipment Manufacturers on a daily basis.
