“Sustainability 2015” is the inaugural AHS conference devoted to the sustainable design of air vehicles in the vertical flight and fixed-wing aircraft industries, covering the spectrum of environment issues as they affect the air vehicle’s entire life cycle from conceptual design through manufacture, entry into service and end-of-life disposal/recycling.

As part of “Sustainability 2015” there will be an extensive technical exhibitors’ space comprising large and small-to-medium enterprises offering specialist Design for the Environment (DFE) and sustainability solutions and products. Contact the organizers for more details.

Gala Dinner Speech by Erik Lindbergh

One of the highlights of the conference will be an after-dinner talk at the event’s Gala Dinner on Wednesday the 23rd by Erik Lindbergh, the grandson of the legendary aviation pioneer.  Erik and his organization “Powering Imagination” are actively pursuing their own pioneering work in the field of aviation sustainability with the goals of making aviation “Clean, Quiet and Exciting”.   Places for the conference Gala Dinner are free for those registering for the conference, but for interested guests not attending the full conference itself, places at the Gala Dinner may be purchased separately.

Short Courses Available

The first training opportunity is “An Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment," presented by Valérie Patreau and her university team from the Polytechnique  de Montréal: Valérie‘s team, CIRAIG, are subject matter experts in this field. The course will be presented in English, only a limited number of seats are available. The fee for this Short Course is $150.00 USD.  Click on the Sustainability 2015 Short Course at the bottom of the registration page to register for this class.

The second excellent training opportunity is “Alternative Fuels” presented by BioFuelNet, and will be taught by subject matter experts in this field. The course will be presented in English, only a limited number of seats are available. The fee for this Short Course is also $150.00 USD.  Click on the Sustainability 2015 Short Course at the bottom of the registration page to register for this class.

Facility Tours Available

As part of the activities on Monday the 22nd, the day before the conference itself formally commences, there’s an outstanding opportunity to participate in facility tours of Bell Canada as part of a single combined activity.  A tour bus will leave the conference hotel in the morning of Monday the 21st and will take the guests to Bell Helicopter for a factory tour (and potentially other sponsors’ facilities as part of a single combined activity.) A light lunch will be served.  Hurry, spaces are strictly limited. There is no fee to go on the tours; however, security clearance is required.  Please send your citizenshp, including dual citizenships held, and country of origin to sustainability@vtol.org. “Spin Your Sustainability Idea” Student Challenge Competition

Attention Students!

Do you have a game-changing idea that will shake up the helicopter and airplane industry? The AHS Sustainability 2015 Conference is inviting creative and curious minds to come up with innovative ideas that will challenge the industry. More specifically, we are looking for ideas in the area of Environmental Sustainability in Air Vehicle Design and Operations of Helicopters and Airplanes. Ideas under any of the 6 conference themes are welcome: 

Free-form Subject Proposals

Do you have a proposal for a sustainability project that does not fit neatly into one of the above areas? No problem, as long as the idea is related to aviation sustainability then feel free to propose it! 

Competition Objective

With this Student Challenge Competition, we’re asking one question:  How can you make a positive impact on the environment through better design, manufacture and operation of helicopters, airplanes or their engines?

Project Idea Requirements

Universities/students interested in entering the project must make their interest known to the conference administration team at the following email address: sustainability@vtol.org

Technical Papers

Papers are welcomed on all the above 6 thematic areas. Please download the Sustainability 2015 Call for Papers Rev (PDF) which includes the template for abstract submittals or download the template in Word.
