The ((Quiet)) Electric VTOL Revolution
3rd Annual Panel at Heli-Expo 2020
Hosted by the Vertical Flight Society and Vertical Magazine
Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA @ Room 210 AB
The Vertical Flight Society is holding its third annual panel discussion of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft at Heli-Expo. This year, the panel will discuss the acoustic benefits of eVTOL aircraft and seek greater engagement from the HAI membership. Leading members from the eVTOL industry and HAI’s Fly Neighborly Committee will provide their perspectives.
The ((Quiet)) Electric VTOL Revolution
Wednesday morning, Jan. 29 @ 9-11 am, Room 210 AB
- Introduction by Mike Hirschberg, VFS
- Moderated by Elan Head, Vertical Magazine
- Jim Sherman, Vertical Flight Society [pdf slides]
- Juliet Page, Volpe — HAI Fly Neighborly Working Group Chair [pdf slides]
- Ben Goldman, Joby Aviation [pdf slides]
- Pamela Cohn, Hyundai Motor Group, UAM Division [pdf slides]
- Mark Moore, Uber Technologies [pdf slides]
In 2018 and 2019, VFS held panels on The Electric VTOL Revolution, with leaders from Airbus, Bell, FAA, Uber and NEXA explaining the potential of eVTOL for missions such as urban air mobility (UAM). This year, HAI has incorporated our past speakers into its "HAI Urban Air Mobility Forum" as part of its main program:
HAI Urban Air Mobility Forum
Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 28 @ 1-3 pm, Ballroom CDE
- Panel moderator: James Viola, HAI president and CEO
- Airbus: Travis Mason, vice president for certification and regulatory affairs
- Bell: Carey Cannon, chief engineer of technology and innovation
- FAA: Jay Merkle, executive director, Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Office
- Uber: Nikhil Goel, head of product for aviation
- Nexa Capital Partners: Michael Dyment, founder and managing partner

To complement HAI's overview panel, this year’s joint VFS-Vertical 3rd Annual Electric VTOL Revolution panel is focused on one of the key advantages of eVTOL over conventional helicopters: noise.
Vertical Magazine, with its eVTOL.com news site, is the joint sponsor for this event. There is no cost to attend the panel, but you must be registered for Heli-Expo. Light refreshments will be served.
Don't miss this insightful panel discussion by experts in UAM and acoustics!
About the Vertical Flight Society: VFS was founded as the American Helicopter Society in 1943 by the visionaries of the early helicopter industry, who believed that technological advancements and collaboration were essential to support this new type of aircraft. Today, history is repeating itself with VFS playing a similar role helping to advance today’s revolutionary VTOL aircraft. See our electric VTOL website at www.eVTOL.news.
VFS Executive Director Mike Hirschberg is also giving a press briefing on "The Future of Vertical Flight," on Monday afternoon, Jan. 27 @ 3:00 – 3:45 pm, Room 213A. [Briefings slides presented]
