AHS International Announces Winner of
2017 Alfred Gessow Best Paper Award

Fairfax, VA — AHS International — The Vertical Flight Technical Society announced today the winner of the Society‘s prestigious Alfred Gessow Award for the best technical paper at AHS International's 73rd AHS Annual Forum and Technology Display.

This year‘s winning paper is “Analysis and Testing of a Boundary-Layer-Ingesting Pusher Propeller for High Speed Rotorcraft,” by Blake Moffitt, Patrick Bowles, Jongwook Joo, Byung-Young Min and Brian Wake of United Technologies Research Center. The paper is available for sale in the Vertical Flight Library, part of the AHS Online Store.

The selection process, which began in October 2016, was extremely rigorous. Session chairs selected some 260 papers from the more than 310 abstracts received. At the Forum, the session chairs and technical committee chairs selected the 20 best papers for final consideration. (For the full list of Forum 73 best papers in each technical category go to http://www.vtol.org/forum-73-best-papers.)

Then the AHS Deputy Technical Directors for Aeromechanics, Vehicle Design, Vehicle Integrity, System Integration, Systems Engineering and Operations and Product Support narrowed that number down to seven papers in each technical area. Following that, the AHS Technical Director and the Gessow Selection Committee reviewed and ranked the papers, and in that ranking, determined that this paper was the “best of the best.”

Dr. Moffitt will receive complimentary travel; registration and lodging to the European Rotorcraft Forum (ERF) in Milan, Italy, September 12-15, 2017, where he will present his paper and also receive the plaque for the Alfred Gessow Best Paper Award. The award is named after the early NASA helicopter pioneer, researcher, author and professor, who was also the founder of the rotorcraft center at the University of Maryland now named for him.

This year‘s 73rd Annual Forum and Technology Display was held on May 9–11, 2017 in Fort Worth, Texas. Next year, the 74th Annual Forum and Technology Display will be held on May 14–17, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona.
