The performance characteristics of a combined rotary wing and fixed wing system are theoretically investigated for various helicopter flight conditions where the lifting rotor provides the entire propulsive force, and for a gyrodyne flight condition where separate means of propulsion provide the propulsive force. In all cases the addition of a fixed wing of moderate area considerably improves the high speed performance of rotary wing aircraft by avoiding blade stall losses at high flight speeds. Since high speed blade stall is responsible for the limited level flight speeds attainable with pure rotary wing aircraft, the addition of a fixed wing removes these limitations.
