Rotor Durability Advanced Technology Demonstration
Authors / Details: William Harris, Sikorsky; Louis Centolanza, Aviation Development DirectorateAbstract
Rotor Durability Advanced Technology Demonstration, a co-funded effort between the Aviation Applied Technology Directorate and Sikorsky Aircraft, demonstrated technologies leading to increased blade durability to support current and future Army Aviation platforms. Milestones for this program included demonstration of improved main and tail rotor environmental durability, repair-ability, and performance. This paper summarizes the work the Army and Sikorsky conducted to accomplish this objective, providing a means for significantly increased aircraft availability rate supporting an increased OPTEMPO for the baseline UH-60L aircraft and the UH-60M. The approaches proposed are expected to reduce life-cycle costs through an improvement-by-spares upgrade concept for the current fleet, as well as new blade designs for next generation aircraft.
