AHS International Announces Winner of
2016 Alfred Gessow Best Paper Award

Fairfax, VA — AHS International – The Vertical Flight Technical Society announced today the winner of the Society’s prestigious Alfred Gessow Award for the best technical paper at the 72nd AHS Annual Forum and Technology Display. This year’s winning paper is entitled Adjoint-based Aeroacoustic Design Optimization of Flexible Rotors in Forward Flight by PhD candidate Enrico Fabiano and Prof. Dimitri Mavriplis from the University of Wyoming.

The selection process, which began in October 2015, was rigorous. Session chairs selected more than 290 papers from the more than 375 abstracts received. At the Forum, the session chairs and technical committee chairs selected the 20 best papers for final consideration, one for each technical committee. All 20 papers are listed at www.vtol.org/forum-72-best-papers and can be purchased from the AHS Vertical Flight Library on the AHS Online Store. Then the Deputy Technical Directors for Aeromechanics, Vehicle Design, Vehicle Integrity, System Integration, Systems Engineering and Operations and Product Support winnowed that number down to seven papers. Following that, the AHS Technical Director and his committee reviewed and ranked the papers, and in that ranking, determined that this paper was the best.

This year’s 72nd Annual Forum and Technology Display was held on May 17-19, 2016, in West Palm Beach, Florida, USA. Next year, the 73rd Annual Forum and Technology Display will be held on May 9-11, at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

Mr. Fabiano will receive complimentary travel, registration and lodging to the European Rotorcraft Forum (ERF) in Lille, France, September 5-8, 2016, where he will present his paper and also receive the Alfred Gessow plaque. The award is named after a helicopter pioneer, researcher, author, professor and founder of the rotorcraft center at the University of Maryland now named for him.
