Kumardip Basak

University of Maryland

Kumardip Basak is a graduate student at the Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland. He is working under the guidance of Dr. Anubhav Datta. He completed his undergraduate studies (2023) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. His current research focuses on vision-based guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) for autonomous drones, particularly in degraded environments where GPS and LIDAR are unreliable. His work involves sensor fusion techniques, including Kalman filtering, to enhance state estimation and improve UAV autonomy in dynamic conditions. Kumardip specializes in attitude estimation using quaternions and Euler angles, integrating IMU data with vision-based tracking for precise localization. He has extensive experience working with PX4-based flight controllers, NVIDIA Jetson platforms, and Intel RealSense cameras to develop robust perception-driven control strategies. His research aims to advance UAV capabilities for complex tasks such as ship-deck landings and operations in cluttered, low-visibility environments.
